    Dan,
What needs to be done to the Trans cover plate for the new shifter on 3A model? Is there a boot that fits the modification?

    Mike,

You shouldn’t have to modify anything as the new T90 shifter sits lower than the original. Boot will still fit. Hope that helps.

Hello Carl, I have a 60 CJ5 and I have two questions. One is if I install an aftermarket overdrive do you sell a boot and floorplate cover that will accommodate the new additional shifter and two who would you recommend for purchasing an overdrive system from?

Yes, we do carry the boot and floorplate. The overdrives we carry: http://www.walcks4wd.com/productdetail.aspx?pid=4746 are meant for early models CJ, Pick Up Truck, Station Wagon and Sedan Delivery Models up to 1954.. As stated in the video. After about 1955 Willys CJs started to get faster, so your CJ5 should reach 55 mph, which then there really is no point for an overdrive.. These early Jeeps only could get up to 45mph, that’s why we put overdrives in them. Newer CJ models can go faster, so overdrives aren’t necessary. It might make your Jeep a bit faster and increase its HP, but probably won’t make enough of a difference to make it worthwhile.

Most old Jeeps that are restored nowadays are Willys. That was the OG Jeep. Also, some of our other posts explain the history of overdrives, as well as wiring harnesses and many other Willys Jeep parts.. Almost all of which are exclusive Walck’s 4WD reproductions.

    Carl, Daniel,
Regarding the overdrive…I have a 62 (226) pickup that I can hit 55-60, at least that’s what the speedo says. (I think it is close as I don’t seem to back up traffic too much). The problem is, it is really reving the engine – 45-50 is really a better speed. What do you think about throwing in one of your overdrives? – I imagine gas mileage may improve, and rpms will drop.

Your speedometer is probably off by a few mph. The reason 45-50 mph is ideal speed for these old Jeeps is that’s as fast as they were meant to drive at. Anything faster will rev the engine too much like you said, and could cause a myriad of other problems. And yes, you’re right – installing an overdrive will definitely reduce RPM’s.. It could very well also improve gas mileage because you won’t be revving the engine as much. Although we don’t take our Jeeps that far, so we wouldn’t know from experience.
